
SECONDARY ENGLISH LANGUAGE
Papers 1,2,3 and 4
A full English paper comprises 4 papers. Operating on a 4 week cycle, all components of a secondary-level English paper will be covered, including the Oral Communication and Listening Components. Our curriculum is tailored to the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate.

It is impossible to write a good essay without the content knowledge necessary to answer a given question. Singular themes and perspectives which define and given reason to the ways in which the world and humanity work are explained via mini lectures in continuous writing weeks, comprehension passages and visual texts.

Lesson Cycle
Week 1
Situational Writing
Techniques which can be applied across all situational writing formats will be introduced (e.g identifying task requirements & applying formal/informal tone). Situational writing formats covered include email, proposal and speech formats.
*Practice: One complete piece of situational writing
Week 2
Continuous Writing
All major narrative and expository essay types will be covered. Formulas for essay content generation, creative introductions and evocative and logical descriptions will be introduced. Mini content lecture components and a range of essay questions will be given each week based on the topic/essay type of that cycle.

*Practice: Introduction/conclusion and one body paragraph addressing one essay question.
Week 3
Editing
Visual Text
Narrative Comprehension
These components are taught together to allow students to gain a sensitivity to the application of the conventions and rules of the English language.
Common grammatical mistakes and their easy fixes will be drilled in the editing component. An awareness of how cultural context and author intention affect language use will be instilled during the visual text and narrative comprehension components via various examination-ready formulas.

Question identification strategies and answering strategies will be highlighted for specific question types during comprehension practices.

Oral component
Non-Narrative Comprehension
Question identification strategies and answering strategies will be highlighted for specific question types during comprehension practices.
Planned Response and Spoken Interaction segments will be practiced this week. Content knowledge will be drawn from the non-narrative comprehension section.
